    Hilarious, love this episode. We did the change the saloon seat covers malarky a couple of years ago, the company we used LOST two of our foam inserts and didn't say anything! However after conversations with the big honcho of the company they made us new foam inserts. Just loads of grief we could do without. Hey ho.

    I think you’re living in my head. Last few videos have been on point for what I’m doing/ thinking about. I spent Wednesday organising our spares as part of our pre departure cleanup. Was thinking of jury rig rudder set up what would we use. There’s an idea for a video for you.😊

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 5 дней назад

      The jury rig rudder is something that we have speculated about as well. As yet we have no good answers about that one and our stern complicates things with the dinghy and solar arch. I sometimes wonder about the old Viking approach of a "steerboard" mounted on one side (starboard side obvs 😉) and lashed to a cleat/pushpit rail. We have an old wooden oar. Would it work? I have no idea...

  • @svhulda6157
    @svhulda6157 6 дней назад

    Yes, quite my experience also. I also carry some aluminium foil. Just in case a fuse should break, that I don't have as a spare. Close to 20 years ago I made a short on our TMC toilet and the fuse burned. The fuse was inside the operating switch. Last year the &@##€ switch broke. Took appart the switch. And the fuse wrapped in aluminium foil materialized. A sustainable repair. The &@##€ switch went in the proper trash, and was replaced by a 50 A car starter switch. Still there, sustainable. If I should empty 16 ton sv Hulda of spares, ropes, nuts and bolts- not in every day use, the waterline would raise 50 mm (2 inches, being imperial).

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 6 дней назад

      We do wonder how much our waterline would raise up as well. We saw a similar boat to our used for racing and it was more on top of the water rather than _in_ the water so we presume that it was emptied of nearly everything. If our original coppercoat was correctly at the waterline, it is now a few centimetres under 😄

    The cheapest option is not always the best option. Especially when pressed for time or in our experience skills. We forked out just shy of €200 for new long zipper on sailbag , repair of 1 loop and 2 new loops for sailbag only to discover he stitched through the pockets for tension bars on sailbag so that is on my list of repair items ( so much for professional canvas worker) Great job on the dye work brought them up lovely.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 11 дней назад

      We are really pleased with the dye, the fabric came up wonderfully well, but whilst we are whining about the (unexpectedly high) price, it is only a little whine. The bunks are far, far better for it and the company did a good job and saved us bucketloads of time which is more important to us than money at the moment. Totally agree with your thinking about the cushions - time is money, and as we get older time becomes very expensive. If we were in our twenties we could raise a gaggle of geese for down and grow a few acres of cotton that we eventually weave into cloth to create our own cushions, but as we get older we realize what a complete waste of time that would be.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 13 дней назад

      We were not planning on Yacht varnish, we are looking at Ronseal because it is for interior woodwork. Basically, the existing varnish is 20 years old and needs a touchup, so a light sand and a couple of tins of satin finish. The last yacht varnish we bought has degraded in under two years and absolutely stank the boat out. So a quality domestic one this time round...

      Yes. Given the shapes and sizes there is not a lot of saving. At least this way they will be properly cut and fitted instead of hacked to bits and then rammed in...

      @@SailingYachtSaltyLass You cannot reef Toppers or Lasers. They are just cruising. 8 to 14 knots breeze max. See also the wind turbine on the land in the background, which gives a good idea of what is happening beyond the confines of the harbour.

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 17 дней назад

      Of course you can reef toppers. I've done it. We used to sail Toppers (see our early episodes). You reef them by wrapping the sail around the mast and then tightening the outhaul. Lasers are bit different. You use the Cunningham to pull the sail down to the desired reef and then lock it off in the jammers. You then tie the leech end to the boom.

    We just headed up Strangford lough at the 4th hour of the ebb tide. Yes we got that bit majorly wrong. I ferry glided many times on the way up 🤪 it was not a fun experience, 3 hours to get from the entrance to Portaferry going at times 9kn boat speed and .5kn SOG. As we got closer to portaferry it got harder. We wrongly assumed that big boat big engine we could push through. Boy did it teach us to focus on our tides more. I think we gave the local community some entertainment, I’m sure we could have had a cup of tea with one house it took so long to get through. 😜

    • @SailingYachtSaltyLass
      @SailingYachtSaltyLass 18 дней назад

      We got it wrong by just 30 minutes last year and gave up and went to Ardglass. We knew there was a back-eddy somewhere but it was closer in to the southern (port-side) shore and we missed it. If you are coming further north, tides will become increasingly important. Imagine a slightly milder version of the Narrows but 20nm long and you have the North Channel (which has whirlpools at the top) Enjoy that cuppa! 😄

    Ladies, As part of our major refit, we were also staggered by the cost of foam when sourced from 'specialists'. We think It's a huge profiteering racket made possible by lack of competition. However, there are ways around it, we went to IKEA and bought suitable foam mattresses and toppers to suite our needs then simply cut them to shape, it's very easy and will literally save you a small fortune.

    It's amazing how the cost of things has gone up. We came back to the UK in the spring and reckoned that the inflation was around 50% over the last four years... For everything. Just seen there is an Olive oil crisis in the UK and EU? 1ltr of Olive oil here in Turkey is £2.20 not £15.00!!! People need to stand up and shout! Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid
